Self-Portraits byFrida Kahlo (1906-1957)

In 1938, poet and surrealist theorist André Breton visited Mexico. Seeing Kahlo's work, he declared it "Un listón de seda alrededor de una bomba." [A swath of silk around a bomb.] Kahlo herself denied her work was surrealist, and said, "...pensaron que yo era surrealista, pero no lo fui. Nunca pinté mis sueños, sólo pinté mi propia realidad." [They thought I was a surrealist, but I was not. I did not paint my dreams, I painted only my exact reality."] For more on this if you read Spanish, visit the Foro Virtual de Cultura Mexicana.
